To take on the Marquis de Sade is not a small matter and to adapt novels for
the screen anymore. But this is the the matter that challenged the Director
Marc Incognito, who is so incognito that I have no information to give you
about him. On the contrary, ther is so much to say about Sade that it is nearly
impossible to sum up his life.
Donatien Alphonse-François de Sade (1740–1814) was a French aristocrat and
writer of philosophy-laden and often violent pornography (rapes, sodomies,
etc.) He was a philosopher of extreme freedom, unrestrained by morality,
religion or law, with the pursuit of personal pleasure being the highest
principle. He was incarcerated in various prisons and in an insane asylum for
about 32 years of his life. Much of his writing was done during his
imprisonment. The term "sadism" is derived from his name. And it is a German
doctor who gave to his name a scientific status, as antonym to masochism to
expalin a sexual perversion in which satisfaction is linked to suffering or
humiliation submitted by another.
My opinion on that movie is shared. On one side its beneficaites of perfect
photographs but on the other side I think it is a toned-down version of Sade's
ideas. We must not forget that he moves libertinage, extreme fanstasms and
sexual violence. He lauded violence until blood. Of course I am not saying that
the director might have tortured actresses but more tension would have help to
understand Sade's spirit. In this movie 3 innocent girls are initiated to flesh
pleasure according to Sade's pervers methods.
